Remedial Massage by Certified Therapist in Sydney
As the name implies, Remedial Massage has a focus on treatments that are healing or remedial in one way or another. It is a bit like an umbrella term that includes various massage techniques and which ones they are, will depend on the particular practitioner and the level of education and training they have had. Remedial Massage is not a well-regulated industry and so the standards are not uniform.
I trained as a Naturopath and our bodywork teachers included osteopaths. Actually early in my training I actually transferred from Naturopathy to Osteopathy along with some of my classmates. That’s how much I loved the physical therapies. After a number of weeks, I went back to Naturopathy but to this day, I have always loved the Body Work side of practice.
The clients I see appreciate my approach. With a degree in Medical Science and training from osteopaths, I am able to deal confidently and competently with musculoskeletal problems. That’s all good and well, but I do enjoy using this form of treatment. I am enthusiastic about what I do and clients get a great massage treatment, they are able to relax at a deep level and essentially leave feeling.
The Conditions Remedial Massage Can Treat
There are so many conditions and situations where Remedial Massage can play a significant role in helping someone to enjoy a healthy, relaxed and pain-free muscles musculoskeletal system. Remedial Massage can be used for the following 4 categories:
1. General muscle tensions, aches and pains, including muscle stiffness. Addressing the feeling that you just need someone to give you a ‘really good massage!’
2. Specific problems that involve your muscles, ligaments, joints or posture. This includes many, many conditions including migraines, headaches, frozen shoulder, stiff neck, spasmed muscle, ‘misalignments’ of joints, lower back pain, certain types of arthritis, hip and pelvic problems.
3. Alternative to ‘cracking‘, or ‘manipulating’ joints. There are various techniques I use that can help to mobilise joints that are not moving the way should be or are ‘out of alignment’. By releasing appropriate ligaments and muscles around a joint, it is possible to re-establish better movement of a joint and help it to move more normally.
4. Prevention. Keeping your muscles and joints in great shape is essential when you want to help minimise and prevent injuries, degeneration, and loss of mobility. Remedial Massage can play such a helpful role in this regard.
Steps Involved In Remedial Massage
Depending on what the client needs, a detailed case history may be taken before the treatment begins. During the treatment, certain tests may be used to help determine what is happening in your body and causing problems. This way your treatment will be targeted in a way that will bring you maximum benefit.
Frequently Asked Questions on Remedial Massage
You’ll be asked to fill out some basic details and tell us about what you need from the treatment.
No. the focus is on particular areas that are causing problems.
Well mostly yes and sometimes no! I always put great importance on being able to relax and enjoy your treatment. It is important to address the mind-body connection! However, there are times during Remedial Massage when you are treating a sore or inflamed area for example, which may not be really relaxing at the time. You are always giving feedback and if something is too uncomfortable, then just let me know.
This question ties to the point above. There may be some pain if an area is injured for example, or if you are working very deeply into fibrous muscles. But obviously there is a limit to this and you will say if something if there is pain so we can take great care and be sensitive to this. Muscles can feel a bit sore or ‘worked on’ after a treatment but this usually goes after a day or so. People call this a “good pain or soreness!”
